U.S. ARMY 80TH ORDNANCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 80th Ordnance Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI, was approved on 6 February 1943. RENOVIMUS, the unit motto, is Latin for “We Renew,” epitomizing the Battalion’s functions of both maintenance and resupply and reinforcing the symbol of the Phoenix, the mythical creature  that arises following its death, the cause of which is often depicted as consuming flames.. With the 2011 reflagging of the 80th Ordnance Battalion as the 13th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB), the insignia is now obsolete.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.7

Originally constituted in the Regular Army as the 6th Motor Transportation Command, the 80th Ordnance Battalion has a history of numerous redesignations, beginning in May 1936 when it was redesignated as the 80th Ordnance Separate Quartermaster Battalion, Light Maintenance. During World War II, it was awarded three campaign streamers for service in the European Theater while designated as the 80th Ordnance Medium Battalion, and remained as a part of the Occupation force in Germany until inactivated in 1947. It was reactivated and served in Germany at Esslingen from 1949 to 1956 when it was replaced by the 66th Ordnance Battalion.

Redesignated as the 80th Ordnance Battalion in 1967, it was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington until it was deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Its service was recognized with a Meritorious Unit Commendation for the entire Battalion and another for the Headquarters and Headquarters Company; it also earned two campaign streamers. It would deploy to the region again in 2009 and earn another Meritorious Unit Commendation before its ultimate inactivation and reflagging as the 13th CSSB.
