The personnel of the 787th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB), an Army Reserve unit headquartered in Dothan, Alabama, is quite serious about the unit “Maintaining The Best” found on its Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest. In fact, on the Battalion’s Facebook page is the self-confident remark “We are the best Combat Sustainment Support Battalion in the world.”
As of Autumn 2023, The 787th CSSB is a subordinate unit of the 642nd Regional Support Group, 143rd Sustainment Command, 377th Theater Sustainment Command. In addition to its Headquarters and Headquarters Company, the 787th comprises two Adjutant General Companies (461st and 809th) two Quartermaster Companies (803rd and the 282nd), two Transportation Companies (939th and 228th), and a Maintenance Company (1015th).
Before this insignia was designated for the 787th Support Battalion (it is unclear when the Battalion became a Combat Sustainment Support unit,) it was designated for the 787th Maintenance Battalion, the organization’s former role.♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦
Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
