U.S. ARMY 765TH TRANSPORTATION BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 765th Transportation Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, was originally approved for the unit on 23 June 1966 and was amended on 25 March 1988 to revise the description and symbolism. Its yellow arrowhead symbolizes the speed and mobility of aircraft; the silver wings denote the aviation aspect of the Battalion’s mission. A trio of blue stars represent the Battalion’s participation in World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War, while the six silver rays stand for the six capabilities of a Transportation Aircraft Maintenance and Supply Battalion.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally constituted as the 7865th Railway Shop Battalion on 12 March 1943, the unit was activated at Camp Plauche, Louisiana on 4 May 1944 and subsequently deployed to Europe, where it took part in the Rhineland campaign. During the Korean War, the Battalion provided rail support throughout the entire conflict, earning two Meritorious Unit Commendations and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation for its exceptional service.

On 1 March 1963, the unit was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 765th Transportation Battalion (Aircraft Maintenance and Support) and activated a little over three weeks later at Fort Benning, Georgia (Fort Benning was renamed Fort Moore in October 2023). Arriving in Vietnam on 10 September 1964, the Battalion would eventually be awarded six Meritorious Unit Commendations for its Vietnam War service before returning to the United States and being inactivated in 1972. It was reactivated 1988 at Fort Eustis, Virginia, where it assumed training duties until its inactivation in 2006.
