U.S. ARMY 742ND MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 742nd Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also known as DUI or a unit crest, was approved on 26 March 2002. At the top of the shield portion of the insignia is an embattlement like you would see on the tops of medieval castle walls. Here it alludes to the historically secure position from which the unit can observe and defend against enemies. The stars below it denote the Battalion’s ability to gather intelligence worldwide in order to achieve their mission goals. An upside-down pile (triangular shape) on a blue background and with stars in the sky suggest day-and-night operations. In the middle of the embattled wall, a polestar symbolizes direction and guidance and is a reference to the Battalion’s duty to provide support to the “Four Corners” of the globe. A bald eagle, our National symbol, embodies strength, military readiness, and vigilance, echoing the motto “Might Through Vigilance.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
