U.S. ARMY 727TH MAINTENANCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 727th Maintenance Battalion is a unit of the New York National Guard that was deactivated along with its parent unit, the 27th Armored Division, in February 1968. Its lineage and history includes participation in six World War I campaigns as the 105th Infantry Regiment, 53rd Infantry Brigade, 27th Division (later 27th Infantry Division) and four World War II campaigns in the Pacific Theater as the 727th Ordnance Light Maintenance Company. When this insignia was first approved, the Battalion was designated as the 727th Armored Ordnance Battalion, 27th Armored Division.

Three interlaced rings in the bottom two-thirds of the shield portion of the 727th Maintenance Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia are intended to depict chain mail, denoting the armored mission of the unit at the time the insignia was approved. A blue chief (upper third) with a fleur-de-lis is from the coat of arms of the 105th Infantry Regiment, the parent unit of the Battalion’s ancestral units. The fusil, or diamond shape, represents the flint from old muskets (flintlocks) and the Mohawk Indians, who referred to themselves as the “flint people” and were indigenous to the Mohawk River Valley, the area in which the Battalion’s home city of Schenectady, New York is located. OMINA PRO VICTORIA is Latin for “All For Victory."

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
