U.S. ARMY 70TH TRAINING DIVISION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 70th Training Division Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the non-color bearing units of the 70th Division on 9 April 1968. It was redesignated several times—for the U.S. Army 70th Regional Support Command (effective date of 16 November 1996), 70th Regional Readiness Command (effective 16 July 2003), and the 70th Training Division (Functional Training) on 16 October 2007.

A battle-axe head is the basis of the insignia; the idea of an axe head is suggested by the Shoulder Sleeve approved for the 70th Infantry Division, which uses a traditional wood-axe head to symbolize pioneering settler clearing paths through dense foliage of the unit’s home area in Oregon. Here, the head of a battle-axe was chosen in honor of the unit’s first participation in Combat. A trio of fleur-de-lis represents three campaigns in Europe during World War II. “Trailblazers” is the unit nickname, again inspired by the rugged Oregon landscape; it also connotes the type of leadership necessary to serve effectively as a training organization.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
