U.S. ARMY 70TH ORDNANCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 70th Ordnance Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved for wear on 13 January 1943. Buff is used for the shield to denote the organization's descent from the Quartermaster Corps, and a pile (wedge shape) represents the driving force of the Battalion; the maintenance functions are symbolized by the crimson wheel. Per The Institute of Heraldry, the numerical designation of the unit is indicated in two ways: the seven spokes of the wheel/seven divisions of the shield plus the “void” of the gold pile.

70th Ordnance Battalion was assigned to the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade at the time of its de-activation in September 1998. Its battles honors include an uninscribed World War II European-African-Middle Eastern Theater campaign streamers and two campaigns streamers from the First Gulf War (Defense of Saudi Arabia and Liberation and Defense of Kuwait). It was also designated as the 70th Ordnance Medium Maintenance Battalion. Its motto was "We Keep The Guns Firing."

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
