U.S. ARMY 682ND ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 682nd Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), more commonly known as a unit crest, was originally approved on 14 December 1951 for the 682nd Engineer Combat Battalion. It was subsequently redesignated for the 682nd Engineer Battalion on 24 September 1963. The foundation of the insignia is the red horizontal and vertical areas, which simulate a post supporting a beam and allude to the construction mission of the Battalion. A bayonet superimposed on a cannon resting on the “post” are symbols of the Battalion’s origins as it was formed from existing Infantry and Artillery units; they also symbolize the Battalion’s designation as a Combat Engineer unit.

A broken ax in the right white area and the scimitar on the left denote combat in Italy and Tunisia, respectively. The organization’s dual mission of construction and combat is represented by the dovetails that interlock the two branch colors, scarlet and white, of the Corps of Engineers, and is further emphasized by the unit motto: BATIR ET COMBATTRE is French for “To Build And To Battle.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
