U.S. ARMY 68TH COMBAT SUSTAINMENT SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest of just DUI for short, pays homage to both the Quartermaster branch (the blue ring invokes the Quartermaster insignia wheel) and the Transportation Corps (the brick-red ring), both of which the unit has served in since it was constituted as the Headquarters, 2nd Battalion, 45th Quartermaster Regiment (Truck-Army) in 1936. Two arrows stand for the India-Burma and Central Burma campaigns in which the unit participated in World War II, and the wavy arrow lines symbolize the tortuous Burma Road; they also convey the idea of points of departure and arrival. The unit motto “Wheels Of Distinction” display the unit's pride in successfully providing combat support under even the most arduous conditions.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Interestingly, the Battalion underwent three redesignations before it was even activated in May 1942, and was redesignated again as the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 68th Quartermaster Battalion, Mobile in December 1943. Following the war and its service in the China-Burma theater, it was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 68th Transportation Corps Truck Battalion in August 1946; twenty years later it would be given the much more manageable title of 68th Transportation Battalion.

The Battalion was deployed during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, taking part in all three campaigns and earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation. In 1992, it was redesignated as the 68th Corps Support Battalion, and deployed under this designation o provide support for humanitarian relief efforts in Somalia and Guantanamo Bay. After taking part in four campaigns in Operation Iraqi Freedom and earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Battalion was redesignated as the 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, the title it carried during its 2009-2010 deployment in Afghanistan to support Operation Enduring Freedom.

The 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion is assigned to the 4th Division Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Division and is based at Fort Carson, Colorado. It is referred to as the 68th Division Sustainment Support Battalion on the Web page of the 4th Division Special Troops Battalion.
