U.S. ARMY 64TH BRIGADE SUPPORT BATTALION (DUI)

The 64th Brigade Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly referred to as unit crest or DUI for short, was approved on 15 January 1976. Its two primary colors, buff (gold) and scarlet, are the colors associated with Support units, while the black is a reference to the unit’s former petroleum capabilities; black is also used for the inscription “The Life Blood Of the Army,” the Battalion motto. A fleur-de-lis above three embattlements is an allusion to the Battalion’s participation in three campaigns in France during World War II, while the wreath formed from rice grainheads in scarlet and gold symbolize service in Vietnam; the two inner blades that are turned down diagonally cross to form the Roman numeral X, a reference to the number of Vietnam War campaigns in which the unit took part. The two red areas are a symbol of the two Meritorious Unit Commendations the Battalion was awarded during that war.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 64th Brigade Support Battalion, which has carried several other Support designations including 64th Support Battalion and 64th Forward Support Battalion, began its service life as the 64th Quartermaster Battalion in 1942. It was activated as the 64th Quartermaster Laundry Battalion in August 1942, then was broken up the following year, with its Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HHD) being redesignated as HHD, 64th Quartermaster Battalion and going on to take part in three World War II campaigns.

Deployed to Europe for several years during the early 1950s, the battalion was inactivated for a decade (1953) before being called to service in Vietnam in 1963; over the next seven years, its service there would be recognized with the campaign streamers and a pair of Meritorious Unit Commendations. It was redesignated on 1 December 1975 as HHD, 64th Support Battalion and assigned to the 4th Infantry Division; it served under this designation in Germany until a 1984 inactivation.

Reactivated in May 1987, the Battalion deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on several occasions (2003, 2005, 2007, 2010), garnering a Valorous Unit Award for its service from December 2007 to February 2009 and a Meritorious Unit Commendation for the 2010-2011 deployment. As of Summer 2023, the 64th Brigade Support Battalion is assigned to the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and is stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado.
