U.S. ARMY 635TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 635th Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 27 January 1997. It was amended on 6 March 2002 to reflect the prescription in AR 670-1 that it be worn in pairs.

A disc of oriental blue in the center of the 635th Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia denotes its origins in the Military Intelligence Corps. On the disc is a profile of an Indian scout, personifying the unit motto of “See, Heed, Fathom”—the necessary skills needed to find and assess enemy forces. The lightning flash on the Indian’s face symbolizes both Electronic Warfare and Signal Intelligence, and the blue disc takes on the role of the Earth to illustrate the Battalion’s worldwide capabilities of both missions. A wreath of dogwood is a reference to Missouri, the unit’s home as part of the Missouri Army National Guard, and the red of the headband is for courage and sacrifice.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
