U.S. ARMY 631ST FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 631st Field Artillery Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), commonly referred to as a unit crest, features two sea lions passant (one “hand” raised, one on the ground) to symbolize the  pair of campaigns the unit took part in during World War II (New Guinea, Southern Phillipines). A blue saltire (“X” shape) on a red field was inspired by the state flag of Mississippi, with the arrows inside each arm of the saltire serving as emblems of the unit’s firepower.

Golden rays of sunlight on the perimeter of the insignia allude to the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation won by the unit, while the scarlet and golden yellow colors used throughout the insignia are associated with Field Artillery units. “Fast Competent Accurate,” the unit motto, is an apt description of the organization’s accuracy, but a closer inspection reveals that it also relays the Brigade’s numerical designation if you assign a numerical value to the first letter of each word: F is the 6th letter, C is the 3rd, and A is the 1st.

The 631st Field Artillery Brigade was deactivated on 30 September 2008 as part of the Army’s Transformation after having spent nearly a century with its headquarters at Grenada, Mississippi.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively,
