U.S. ARMY 63RD AVIATION GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 63rd Aviation Group was a unit in the Kentucky Army National Guard that was redesignated as the 63rd Theater Aviation Brigade in 2007 and given a new Distinctive Unit Insignia (unit crest). It was organized and Federally recognized at Frankfurt on 15 September 1986 in the Kentucky Army National Guard as Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), Aviation Brigade, an organic element of the 35th Infantry Division. On 1 September 1995, it was reorganized and redesignated as HHC, 63rd Aviation Group and concurrently relieved from assignment to the 35th Infantry Division.

The 63rd Aviation Group Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 27 July 1995. It features a shield of light blue to represent the sky—the unit’s theater of operations. Ultramarine blue, branch color of the Aviation Corps, is used for the banner upon which the unit motto of “Surpass The Standard” is inscribed. Pegasus, the mythical winged horse, alludes to the Group’s home of Kentucky and its heritage of world-renowned horse breeders and horse racing, with the wings indicating the Group’s missions and capabilities.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
