U.S. ARMY 588TH ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 588th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI, was originally approved for the 388th Engineer General Service Regiment on 15 March 1943. It was redesignated for the 588th Engineer Battalion on 28 October 1954. It is now worn by personnel in the 588th Brigade Engineer Support Battalion.

Serving as a bend dexter is a wavy diagonal division of the shield containing a black diminutive of the bend; the wavy division represents rivers the unit has crossed, while the black bar (a “cost” in heraldry) is the heraldic representation of a military commander’s scarf and symbolizes the pipe that was handled by the unit while maintaining and building the Alaska Highway, also called the Alaska-Canadian Highway of the AL-CAN Highway. A ptarmigan is emblematic of the geographic region of Canada where the unit served, and the silver spruce tree recalls foliage of the Canadian wilderness, with the silver suggesting snow on an evergreen. HIC ET UBIQUE, the unit motto, is a Latin phrase meaning “Here And Everywhere.”

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Constituted originally as the 388th Engineer Battalion in the Army of the United States on 1 January 1942, the 588th Engineer Battalion would serve under its original designation for one year and earn an American Theater campaign streamers (uninscribed) for its work on the AL-CAN Highway before becoming the 388th Engineer General Service Regiment. In February 1954, the unit was given its current designation and would next be deployed in a combat zone during the Vietnam War. Credited with participation in thirteen campaigns in Vietnam, the Battalion was awarded two Valorous Unit Awards, two Meritorious Unit Commendations, and a Republic of Vietnam (ROV) Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class. (Company C is entitled to individual awards of the ROV Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the ROV Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class). The Battalion would serve in all three campaigns of the Southwest Asia conflict and be rewarded with another Meritorious Unit Commendation. It was also deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003-2004 and once again had its exceptional service recognized with a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

As of Autumn 2023, the 588th Brigade Engineer Battalion is assigned to the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
