U.S. ARMY 57TH SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Often called a unit crest or a DUI for short, the 57th Signal Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved for wear on 18 November 1841. Its design features four orange and white wires—colors of the Signal Corps—forming a mascle-shaped antenna to symbolize the nature of the organization’s mission and activities. VINCIMUS SPATIUM, the unit motto, is a Latin phrase meaning “We Conquer Space.”

Originally constituted in the Regular Army on 18 October 1927, the 57th Signal Battalion was not activated until 10 February 1941 at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. Before its inactivation in September 1945, the Battalion would take part in seven World War II campaigns, a number made even more impressive considering that three of those campaigns—Naples-Foggia, Anzio, and Southern France—saw the Battalion hitting the beaches with as part of the assault landings.

The Battalion would remain inactive for over twenty years, finally being reactivated on 16 May 1966 at Fort Hood in Texas. It would not be deployed to a combat zone again until the First Gulf War, where it served in all three of the campaigns and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation. Since the launch of the War on Terrorism, the number of campaigns for which the Battalion, nicknamed “Voiced Of The Warrior, will be credited has yet to be determined, but it has been awarded two Meritorious Unit Commendations as of 2019, with its B Company entitled to an additional MUC.

Currently, the 57th Signal Battalion (Expeditionary)—also referred to as the 57th Expeditionary Signal Battalion—is assigned to the 11th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade and is stationed at Fort Cavazos (previously Fort Hood) in Texas.
