U.S. ARMY 530TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Inactivated in June 2013 at Fort Lee (renamed Fort Gregg-Adams in 2023) in Virginia, the 530th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB) was originally constituted in 1942 in the Army of the United States as the 530th Quartermaster Service Battalion on 29 December 1942 and activated on 14 January 1943 at Camp Butner, North Carolina. Deployed to the European Theater, the Battalion would take part in the Naples-Foggia campaign before it was broke up on 6 February 1944 and its elements reorganized and redesignated, with its Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HHD) becoming the HHD, 530th Quartermaster Battalion and its four Companies beginning new lineages as Quartermaster Service units. After taking part in campaigns in Southern France and the Rhineland, the HHD was inactivated in France on 25 June 1946.

Two decades later, it would be converted and redesignated on 10 January 1966 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 530th Supply and Services Battalion, allotted to the Regular Army, and activated two weeks later on 24 January 1966 at Fort Bragg (renamed Fort Liberty in 2023) in North Carolina. Over four decades would elapse before it became the 530th Support Battalion in October 2006; it is unclear when it was redesignated as the 530th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. During the War on Terrorism, the unit was honored with Meritorious Unit Commendations, one while still designated as a Supply & Service Battalion (for service between May 2005 and April 2006) and another while designated as the 530th Support Battalion (service between 7 February 2011 and January 2012).

The 530th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a DUI or a unit crest, was first approved for the 530th Supply and Service Battalion on 28 July 1966. It was revised to include metric measurements and to change the symbolism on 16 February 1993, followed by an amendment to the motto and a correction of the symbolism on 7 April 1995. It was redesignated for the 530th Support Battalion with an effective date of 16 October 2006.

A wyvern, a mythical bipedal winged dragon with a tail terminating in an arrow or diamond-shaped tip, is the focal point of the insignia. Taken from the coat of arms of Draguignan, capital of the Var Department in France, it represents the Battalion’s participation in an assault landing during Operation Dragoon. The insignia’s black and red colors are a reference to the Rhineland campaign in which the Battalion also participated. Four foils, two red and two black, are an allusion to the Battalion’s Support function. “Warrior Spirit Warrior Support” is the Battalion motto.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
