U.S. ARMY 516TH SIGNAL BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

When the 516th Signal Brigade was activated on 16 October 1992, it assumed the heritage and honors of the 516th Signal Group, which traced its origins to the establishment of the 3367th Signal Service Battalion in October 1944.

But for its Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest of DUI, the Brigade was authorized the wear of the DUI approved for the 1106th Signal Brigade, which was created through the reflagging of an element of the United States Army Strategic Communications Command-Pacific (STRATCOM-PAC), which had been activated on 1 September 1964 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; the 1106th was activated on 1 October 1989 and inactivated on 15 October 1992. The next day, its personnel were reflagged as the 516th Signal Brigade, its subordinate battalions assigned to the new unit, and the 1106th’s DUI was authorized for the 516th Signal Brigade.

The 516th Signal Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia features a black semi-circular border upon which is inscribed the 516th Signal Brigade unit motto and nickname, “Voice Of The Pacific.” Black stands for the brigade’s strength, solidarity of purpose, and 24/7, night-and-day military preparedness. The blue of the center disc symbolizes the waters of the Pacific Ocean, while the disc itself suggests a globe and thus the worldwide aspect of the Brigade’s mission. Two lightning flashes are emblems of modern electronics and communications, while a pair of crossed spears are taken from the Hawaiian state seal and recall the heritage and home of the 1106th at Fort Shafter. A conch shell at the base of the insignia is another reference to the unit’s home area, and it also an example of an early means of “signals communication” in the Pacific.
