U.S. ARMY 615TH TRANSPORTATION BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 615th Transportation Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 515th Maintenance Battalion on 8 May 1970. It was redesignated for the 515th Support Battalion with revised symbolism and description on 16 May 1994. It was then redesignated for the 615th Transportation Battalion, with updated symbolism, with an effective date of 1 September 2006.

A pair of sea lions, suggested by the coat of arms of Luzon in the Philippine Islands, is a reference to where units in the Battalion’s lineage served during World War II. At base are three wavy blue bars that allude to the three Presidential Unit Citations awarded to the Battalion’s ancestral unit for service in Manila, Bataan, and Defense of the Philippines.

An upright flaming sword, inspired by imagery on the coat of arms of Bataan, are an emblem of the heroic action there and serves as inspiration for the motto “Guardian Of The Flame.” A stylized Philippine Sun on the handle of the sword symbolizes the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation credited to the Battalion; the rays of the sun, combined with the saltirewise rays emanating from it, are a reference to the imagery of the New Mexico State Flag, reflecting the unit’s location and affiliation with the New Mexico Army National Guard.

As of Autumn 2023, the 615th Transportation Battalion is an element of the 111th Sustainment Brigade, New Mexico Army National Guard. The Battalion’s Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment are based at Springer, New Mexico.
