U.S. ARMY 50TH SUPPLY AND SERVICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 50th Supply and Service Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 17 January 1973. Allotted to the Florida Army National Guard, the Battalion’s home state and headquarters in the North Miami are represented by the full sun and a heraldic fountain, the sun in reference to the nickname “Sunshine State,” and the fountain is an allusion to the mythical Fountain of Youth which Spanish explorer and discoverer of Florida Ponce de Leon sought.

A checkered disc is used to symbolize the eponymous mission of supply and service; the checkerboard design denotes control of various types of supplies, and combined with the rays of the sun indicates the organization’s capability for providing electronic accounting-machine service for the operation of storage facilities. Cleverly, the five wavy sun rays combined with the round background form the numerical designation of the Battalion. “Professionals In Service” is the unit motto that reflects the pride taken in the Battalion’s important support mission.

The 50th Supply and Service Battalion was an active-duty unit in the Florida Army National Guard that is now either inactivated, disbanded, or has been redesignated.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
