U.S. ARMY 507TH SUPPORT GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 507th Support Group Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly called a “unit crest” or DUI, was originally approved for the 507th Transportation Group on 21 March 1969. It was redesignated for the 507th support Group on 28 September 1992 with the description and symbolism revised. Its brick-red and gold colors are those of the Transportation Corps, the unit’s branch at the time the insignia was first approved, and the gold ship’s wheel in the center is a reference to the Group’s function of controlling movement.

Inside the wheel are four chevrons that simulate Arrowheads commemorating the organization’s four assault landings in the European Theater during World War II; their clockwise arrangement also casts them as the four basic directions on a compass. A dragon considered a symbol of good fortune in the Orient, and here it recalls the former Group’s service in Vietnam. “Responsive” is the organization’s motto.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

No longer an active unit, the 507th Support Group, also known as the 507th Corps Support Group, was originally constituted in the Army of the United States on 28 May 1943 as Company, 52nd Quartermaster Truck Battalion was activated the next month. It earned credit for participation in the Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Anzio and North Apennines campaigns in Europe and was honored with a Meritorious Unit Commendation before it’s inactivation 20 April 1946 in Italy.

The unit would undergo a copious number of redesignations and reorganizations before finally receiving the 507th Transportation Group designation, and it was under this title that it would be sent to Vietnam and participate in an astonishing fourteen named campaigns (out of a total of seventeen). It would also earn a second Meritorious Unit Commendation. The Group was inactivated in December 1971 at Fort Lewis, Washington and would remain dormant until reactivation at Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty) in North Carolina on 1 September 1980.

At the time of its next redesignation to become the 507th Corps Support Group, the unit was taking parting in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in action that would net it its third Meritorious Unit Commendation. More than sixteen years later, in May 2007, its Headquarters and Headquarters Company was deployed to Iraq to support supported A1 Asad and Al Taqaddum Air Bases, and its relentless dedication to mission accomplishment and ability to adapt to shifting battlefield conditions led to its fourth and final Meritorious Unit Commendation.

It is not clear when the 507th Support Group was inactivated or redesignated, converted, or consolidated with another unit under a new designation.
