U.S. ARMY 504TH SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Orange and white, official branch colors of the Signal Corps, are used exclusively in the shield portion of the 504th Signal Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI. The colors are counterchanged (alternated), with the right side having a white background and orange charges and vice-versa on the left. A hand grasping a lightning flash symbolizes the mission of the Battalion, with the flash being a common image used to convey the speed of modern electronics communications and the flames emerging from the flash conveying the zeal and readiness of the unit’s personnel to carry out the mission.

The lower half of the shield has four orange, wavy barrulets, a reference to the four locations in which the unit was activated: Italy, Japan, Germany, and the United States. (Note: the 504th Signal Battalion’s lineage per the U.S. Army Center of Military History does not mention activation in Germany, but it assuredly took place. You can read a bit about it on the “U.S. Army in Germany”
Web site page devoted to the Battalion.) The barrulets are wavy as an allusion to the Arno River, site of the Battalion’s lone battle honor for service during World War II. “Think, Go, Do” is the Battalion motto.

The 504th Signal Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also referred to as a “unit crest” or a DUI, was approved on 18 May 1962 and was subsequently amended to correct the description and symbolism of the imagery.

Following its final activation at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, the 504th Signal Battalion was assigned to the 1th Signal Brigade. It was inactivated in June 2007.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
