5010TH U.S. ARMY HOSPITAL UNIT CREST (DUI)

A component of the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Command’s Southeast Medical Area Readiness Support Group, the 5010th U.S. Army Hospital is based in Augusta, Georgia and as of Autumn 2023comprises four Medical Support Units (7201st, 7217th, 7222nd, and 7235th). The 5010th U.S. Army Hospital Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest, was approved on 4 March 1976.

“Courage Concern,” motto of the 5010th, is inscribed in gold letters set on a maroon scroll encircling the bottom third of a heraldic sunburst; sixteen rays of sunlight symbolize strength, good health, and restoration. A red cross, traditional heraldic symbol of aid and assistance, specifically represents the 5010th, with the fleur-de-lis place in its center recalling the early French influence of the unit’s location in Louisville, Kentucky at the time the insignia was approved. The cross’ scarlet tone is the color for courage, while its gold border represents achievement and the maroon of the scroll is one of the Army Medical Department colors.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
