U.S. ARMY 490TH CHEMICAL BATTALLION UNIT CREST (DUI)

A golden dragon on a cobalt blue field is the focal point of the 490th Chemical Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, a device commonly called a “unit crest” or DUI for short, that was approved on 28 November 1967. Dragons are frequently used for the insignia of Chemical units because they embody the destructive capabilities of Chemical Warfare, and the wavy golden perimeter of the blue field suggests clouds, an allusion to smoke and thus to both gas warfare and smoke as a method of concealment; this dual meaning is encapsulated in the Battalion motto of “Smoke Fight.” The Dragon is emerging from an Erlenmeyer Flask that recalls the mixing of elements and chemical experiments.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
