U.S. ARMY 485TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 485th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also referred to as a DUI or unit crest, was originally approved for the 424th Infantry Regiment, Organized Reserves on 24 June 1936. It was redesignated for the 485th Regiment (Advanced Individual Training) on 1 April 1959. The organization’s origins in the Infantry are reflected in the blue used for the shield. A gauntleted, embowed arm is a symbol of crushing power and strength, a concept reiterated in the unit motto PERRUMPO, Latin for “I Break Through.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 485th Regiment was first constituted in the Organized Reserves as the 485th Glider Infantry on14 July 1946 and assigned to the 108th Airborne Division, with its activation coming around three weeks later on August 1946 at Jacksonville,  Florida. (The Organized Reserves were redesignated as the Organized Reserve Corps in March 1948 and as the Army Reserve in July 1952.)

Several reorganizations and redesignations soon followed, beginning with the change to the 485th Airborne Infantry in February 1951. Fifteen months later, the unit would be reorganized and redesignated as the 485th Infantry on 1 March 1952 and concurrently relieved from assignment to the 108th Airborne Division and reassigned to the 87th Infantry Division, with its HQ relocated to Birmingham, Alabama on 31 January 1954. It was subsequently inactivated a little over two years later on 31 March 1956 at Birmingham, Alabama.

Its assignment to the 87th Infantry Division ended when it was relieved from it on 1 April 1959, followed by its redesignation as the 485th Regiment. It was activated on 30 April as an element of the 108th Division (Training), with its HQ moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Its role as a Training organization has continued for more than six decades since that time despite undergoing at least four reorganizations altering how many Battalions it would consist of and what Division (if any) the Battalions were elements of.

As of Autumn 2023, the Regiment comprises the 2nd and 3rd Battalions, both assigned to the 98th Training Division, 108th Training Command and consisting of Drill Sergeants responsible for Initial Entry Training (IET) of new recruits. The 2nd Battalion is based in Orlando and the 3rd Battalion is stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia.
