U.S. ARMY 479TH FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 479th Field Artillery Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia, often called a DUI or unit crest, was approved on 27 January 1971. It was cancelled 17 October 1999 when the unit was designated as the 4th Brigade, 75th Division, but was reapproved when the brigade was reactivated under its current designation at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Longtime Field Artillery colors scarlet and yellow are used on a scroll with an inscription of the unit motto, “Dependable Support.” A pair of cannon barrels identifies the unit as Field Artillery, and the scarlet shot breaking the billets simulates a breakthrough, a reference to the Central Europe campaign of World War II. Wavy blue bars below the shot denote the crossing of the Rhine and Moselle rivers during the Rhineland campaign, also in World War II.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap" respectively.

Following its 1 December 2006 reactivation, the 479th Field Artillery Brigade was placed under the command of First Army Division West. A multi-component organization with both active-duty and Reserve elements, it served as the training support brigade at Fort Hood’s Mobilization Training Center, where it assisted in the training and mobilization of Army Reserve and National Guard units preparing to deploy.

Its focus was in weapons qualification, culture and language training, counter-IED tactics, mounted gunnery and convoy live-fire operations, driver’s training, and force protection. Its ongoing success at providing “Dependable Support” to Army Reserve and National Guard units was recognized on 6 August 2017 when it was named the recipient of an Army Superior Unit Award for service between 1 June 2008 to 30 September 2011.

The 479th Field Artillery Brigade was deactivated at Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos) in June 2015.
