U.S. ARMY 472ND CHEMICAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 472nd Chemical Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 4 March 1968. A trio of benzene rings with cobalt blue fields and golden yellow borders incorporate the branch colors of the Chemical Corps, while a black disc with golden yellow perimeter is the military smoke-generator symbol, with the black simulating smoke; the disc is also an allusion to a wheel and the unit’s mobility. A golden yellow star denotes the command and supervision of anywhere from three to eight smoke-generator companies, which are represented by the three benzene rings that suggest chemical symbols. “Provide The Way” is the Battalion motto.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
