U.S. ARMY 46TH ENGINEER GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 46th Engineer Group ("We Build And Protect") was created as result of Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara’s view that the number of Army reserve components (the Reserve and National Guard combined) was too large during the Vietnam War. Consequently, the 46th Infantry Division of the Michigan Army National Guard was redesignated as the 46th Brigade and assigned to the 38th Infantry Division in the Indiana National Guard. During the reorganization, the Headquarters of the old 46th Infantry Division’s 3rd Brigade and the HQ of th3 2nd Battalion, 225th Infantry were consolidated to become the 46th Engineer Group (Construction), a non-divisional unit.

Very little information is readily available regarding the 46th Engineer Group. According to the Web site Global Security, one of the few to have any information on the unit, the Group comprised two Engineer Battalions (the 107th and 507th) and assisted in the construction of bridges, parks, and hiking trails; carried out island restoration; and conducted snow removal from Michigan’s upper peninsula.

The Global Security Web site goes on to state that by early February 2002, the 46th Engineer Group of the Michigan Army National Guard had been reorganized and redesignated as the Engineer Brigade, 38th Infantry Division, which in turn has been either inactivated, deactivated, redesignated, reflagged, or disbanded.
