U.S. ARMY 464TH CHEMICAL BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 464th Chemical Brigade was an Army Reserve unit that was constituted in 1953 (as the 464th Chemical Group) and inactivated on 16 September 2008. (You can read complete details of the Brigade’s lineage by visiting the 464th Chemical Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia page.) Its mission was to provide command and control of two to six Chemical battalions and any other assigned or attached separate companies at the Corps level, but as a Brigade it also commanded a wide variety of non-Chemical battalions including Military Police, Military Intelligence, Signal, Engineer, and Personnel Services.

At the time of its inactivation, the Brigade comprised the 485th Chemical Battalion and the 365th and 458th Engineer Battalions. You can read about its service conducting chemical exercises, providing WMD training, and its contributions in support of the War on Terrorism on the 464th Chemical Brigade CSIB page.

The 464th Chemical Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly referred to as a DUI or unit crest, was originally approved on 25 February 1974 when the unit was still designated as the 464th Chemical Group; it was redesignated for the Brigade on 4 June 1987. “We Serve In Silence” denotes the often hidden or obscure aspect of the Brigade’s work, as well as the lack of recognition the Brigade deserved for its potentially lifesaving work. A rising radiant sun at the top of the insignia denotes the Brigade’s command authority, and the benzene ring below it alludes to the unit’s mission and capabilities. Four drops are a reference to the four main chemical reactions, and they also refer to the unit’s location in Johnstown, Pennsylvania—known for several major floods—at the time the insignia was approved and when the unit was inactivated.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-
1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(e), “Garrison cap, Army green, male and female.”
