U.S. ARMY 442ND SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 442nd Signal Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), commonly referred to as a “unit crest,” was approved for wear on 19 July 1968. Its shield is divided into four quadrants, two black and two orange, with the unit motto “Ready Rapid Reliable” in black text on a silver scroll attached to the base of the shield.

Three spears with multiple bars commemorate the unit’s participation in three World War II campaigns in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater for which it was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation, while the four quadrants are an allusion to the unit’s assignment to the U.S. Army Strategic Communications Command and its mission reaching the four corners of the world. Combined with the lightning flashes, the quadrants denote readiness for global deployment to deliver communication capabilities to supported organizations and units. A gold, looped cable symbolizes the Battalion’s technical capabilities of installing and operating Signal Centers.

You can find guidance on wear of the DUI in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally constituted as the 442nd Signal Construction Battalion, Aviation in the Army of the United States on 19 July 1942, the Battalion was reorganized and redesignated as the 442nd Signal Heavy Construction Battalion (1 August 1944) before receiving its current designation more than two decades later (6 November 1967) when it was allotted to the Regular Army and activated in Thailand.

It was still in Thailand when its Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment were inactivated 30 June 1971. On 23 September 1986, its Headquarters were transferred to the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Gordon in Georgia, which was redesignated as Fort Eisenhower in October 2023. In 2000, its excellence in carrying out its training mission was recognized with an Army Superior Unit Award.

As of Autumn 2023, the 442nd Signal Battalion is still stationed at Fort Eisenhower.
