U.S. ARMY 429TH QUARTERMASTER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Inactivated for an unknown length of time, the 429th Quartermaster Battalion was constituted in the Organized Reserves, forerunner of today’s Army Reserve, on 24 June 1921 as the 104th Division Train, Quartermaster Corps and organized in September 1922. It was redesignated as the 104th Division Quartermaster Train in March 1925 and then as the 429th Quartermaster Regiment in July 1936 while remaining assigned to the 104th Division (later 104th Infantry Division).

It was designated as the 429th Quartermaster Battalion on 6 April 1942, with the Ordnance Maintenance Platoon of its HQ Company splitting off into a new lineage when it became 804th Ordnance Light Maintenance Company, an element of the 104th Infantry Division. This Company was ordered into active military service and served in World War II from 15 September 1942 until it was inactivated at Camp San Luis Obispo on 18 December 1945. It would undergo several redesignations to eventually become the 4th Brigade, 104th Training Division in the Army Reserve (the
Global Security Web site has detailed lineage of the unit during this period.)

Unfortunately, this is the only mention of the 429th Quartermaster Battalion on the U.S. Army Center of Military History Web site. At The Institute of Heraldry, we learn that the Battalion’s Distinctive Unit Insignia, often referred to as a unit crest or just DUI, was authorized on 1 September 1997, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the unit was active at that time.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The buff and light blue tones used in this Distinctive Unit Insignia are the traditional colors used by Quartermaster organizations.  A crossed key and sword in the shield portion of the insignia are a visual reminder of the Battalion motto “Key To Battle Support,” while the battlements that divided the shield into upper and lower halves suggest a strong defense and recall the unit’s World War II campaigns in the Rhineland and European Theater. A fleur-de-lis between the tops of the sword and key are reminder that the Battalion also fought in France during the Second World War.
