U.S. ARMY 420TH ENGINEER BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Approved on 16 April 1968, the 420th Engineer Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia features a red disc with a gold-trimmed white saltire and gold disc over the intersection of the two white lines. The effect simulates two distinct devices—an optical measuring device and a weapon sight or reticle—to reflect the Brigade’s dual engineering and combat missions. The gold disc indicates the Brigade’s command function, and the gold trim denote planning, coordination, and supervision of those missions. “Success Our Blueprint,” the Brigade motto, is inscribed with silver letters on a blue background to recall the type of blueprint an engineer might use.

Since it was first activated in 1951 as the 420th Engineer Aviation Brigade, the has been called into active service just two times, both of them following the launch of the Global War on Terrorism in 2001. During its first activation for service, two of the Brigade’s battalions, the 980th and 489th, were deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2008 the Brigade was called into service again, and over the next six years (2008 to 2013) nine different companies were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, while the 980th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Heavy) was sent to Afghanistan in 2011–2012. Most recently, the Brigade’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company deployed to Kuwait in March 2017 to serve as the Theater Engineer Brigade supporting Operation Spartan Shield.

As of Autumn 2023, the 420th Engineer Brigade is allotted to the U.S. Army Reserve and is assigned to the 416th Theater Engineer Command. The Brigade is based in Bryan, Texas and commands the 961st Engineer Battalion in addition to the aforementioned 489th and 980th Engineer Battalions.
