U.S. ARMY 41ST FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 41st Field Artillery Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved for wear on 9 July 1924, just eight days after the unit had been redesignated from 41st Artillery Battalion (Railway) (Coast Artillery Corps) to simply 41st Coast Artillery, a regiment. Its stint as a railway Artillery unit is celebrated in the insignia with the inclusion of black circular railroad tracks and scarlet railroad ties, while the crossed Hawaiian spears are in homage to the unit’s location at the time (Fort Kamehameha). A projective superimposed over the spears reflects the unit’s mission.

Like many Field Artillery units, the “Rail Gunners” Brigade was briefly designated as a Fires Brigade beginning in 2007, but in less than ten years it was redesignated under its old title, which it had first received in 1982. Returning to Germany for a second deployment in 2018—its first assignment had last over 30 years—the Brigade was augmented with the addition of the 589th Brigade Support Battalion to assist it in its mission of conducting long-range artillery fire. Further enhancements to the Brigade are planned, including a Signal Company and two new Multiple Launch Rocket System battalions.

On 27 August 2020, the Brigade's third and final Field Artillery battalion—1st Battalion, 77th Field Artillery Regiment (FAR)—was activated at Grafenwoehr, Germany. As of Autumn 2023, the Brigade consists of its Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion; 1st Battalion, 6th FAR; 1st Battalion, 77th FAR; and the 589th Brigade Support Battalion.  It is still headquartered at Grafenwoehr.
