The green in the 41st Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, commonly called a unit crest or DUI for short, is a reference to the unit's service in Italy during World War II, with the wreaths alluding to the coat of arms of that nation. A red triangle simulates a mountain, recalling both the campaign in the Apennines and the organization's origins as a Mountain Battalion. The unit motto, VIGOR ET VALOR, is Latin for “Strength And Spirit.” The insignia was approved on 21 October 1954.Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Originally constituted as the 126th Engineer Mountain Battalion in the Army of the United States on 27 August 1942 and organized September 14 of the same year, the 41st Engineer Battalion is currently assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. It was redesignated twice during World War, first in July 1943 as the 126th Engineer Light Combat Battalion, 10th Light Division (later designated 10th Mountain Division) and then as the 126th Engineer Mountain Battalion on 6 November 1944. It took part in two campaigns in Italy while serving with the 10th Mountain Division, North Apennines and Po Valley, before it was inactivated in November 1945.
It was redesignated as the 41st Engineer Combat Battalion on 18 June 1948 and activated 1 July 1948. On 15 June 1954, it received its current designation as the 41st Engineer Battalion, but was inactivated four years later. It was reactivated in September 1985 and in 1993 took part in the Somalia Armed Forces Expedition, then was deployed at the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom, earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its year-long tour between 2003 and 2004.
It began a ten-year period of inactivation on 15 September 2004 that ended with its current assignment to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division on 16 October 2014. Since reactivation, a detachment of its Headquarters and Headquarters Company has been awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation (April to December 2015). As of Summer 2023, the unit is serving as the 41st Brigade Engineer Battalion and remains assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.
