U.S. ARMY 415TH CHEMICAL BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 415th Chemical Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia was first approved for the 415th Chemical Group on 28 December 1979 and was redesignated for the Brigade on 16 September 1987. Its centerpiece is a dragon rampant, also used on the Brigade’s unit patch, as a symbol of fire and destruction. The dragon’s strength lies in its tail, where we see three red barbs that represent Chemical, Biological, and Nuclear warfare, the primary areas of the unit’s overall mission and capabilities. The dragon’s body is green, an allusion to the unit’s home base of Greenville, South Carolina.

Around the dragon is a hexagon known as a benzene ring, a symbol of chemistry taken from the Chemical Corps’ branch insignia. The colors cobalt blue and golden yellow are incorporated into the insignia in the border and periphery of the ring; these are official Chemical Corps branch colors. The unit motto, “CHEMISM,” means chemical action or force, and in this context indicates the Brigade stands ready to use whatever action or force is necessary to ensure the national defense.

As of Autumn 2023, the 415th Chemical Brigade is allotted to the U.S. Army Reserve and is assigned to the 76th Operational Response Command. It is headquartered in Greenville, South Carolina and has five subordinate units based in states along the east coast of the United States, including the 92nd Chemical Battalion (Georgia), 457th Chemical Battalion (South Carolina), 479th Chemical Battalion (New York), 485th Chemical Battalion (Delaware), and 20th Support Command Detachment (Maryland).
