U.S. ARMY 413TH CIVIL AFFAIRS BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The 413th Civil Affairs Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved for wear on 14 June 1993. Its purple and white tones were approved for use by Civil Affairs organizations in 1956, while the globe and torch above it are taken from the insignia of branch for Civil Affairs. The four sections of the shield portion of the insignia suggest unity and complementary military/civilian missions of the organization, as well as cooperation and teamwork. Two olive branches are symbolic of the desire for peace, a notion reinforced by the unit motto, “Peace Through Humanity.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Constituted in the Organized Reserve Corps as the 413th Military Government Company on 17 February 1949, the 413th Civil Affairs Battalion has retained the same numerical designation for more than seven decades despite several redesignations. By the time it was ordered into active military service for the first time in support of Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm, it had been redesignated as the 413th Civil Affairs Company. The Company was credited with participation in two campaigns before it was released from active service by April 1991.

The following year, the unit was given its current designation of Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 413th Civil Affairs Battalion on 16 September 1992. Between 1996 and 2008, the Battalion would be ordered into active service on three more occasions, with a Detachment from Company A earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) for its service in providing essential civil military operation support in Iraq between April 2006 and April 2007. For its October 2008 to June 2009 deployment, Company B was also tapped for a MUC for providing effective non-lethal operations support with Multi-National Division-North’s area of operations that was essential to the success of the 25th Infantry Division’s mission.

The 413th Civil Affairs Battalion was most recently in the news while assigned to the 321st Civil Affairs Brigade, 350th Civil Affairs Command in 2019, when its Delta Company was selected to receive the Reserve Organization of America’s Outstanding Army Reserve Small Unit Award. As of Autmn 2023, the status of the Battalion is uncertain as it is no longer on the Web site of the
U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command.
