U.S. ARMY 411TH ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The red and white shield of the 411th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, incorporates the primary and secondary branch colors, respectively, of the Army Corps of Engineers, with a white bend suggesting a road, airstrip, bridge, and so on, with dovetails to further emphasizing the construction aspect of the Engineers mission.

Two narrow white lines, or cotises, lie above and below the bend; these are references to the Battalion’s two campaigns in the Pacific Theater of World War II (New Guinea and Luzon). A blue and red bendlet between them recalls the military decorations it was given for service in those campaigns, a Meritorious Unit Commendation (blue) and Philippine Presidential Unit Citation (red). Red and blue also simulates the stripes seen in the state flag Hawaii, the Battalion’s one-time site of activation and current home. “Ready And Able” is the unit motto.
The Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 6 December 1954.

You can find guidance on wear of the DUI in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally constituted as the 411th Engineer Base Shop Battalion in the Army of the United States on 24 July 1942, the Battalion would serve in the Pacific Theater under that designation and as the 411th Engineer Special Shop Battalion before returning to the U.S. and being inactivated on 4 February 1946. It was given its current designation in October 1953 at Fort DeRussy in Hawaii, moving to Fort Shafter in 1994. Since the launch of the War on Terrorism, it has been called into service just once since that time, taking part in two campaigns in the Iraq Theater in the War on Terrorism (Transition of Iraq and Iraqi Governance) and earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation for service between 2004 and 2005.

As of Autumn 2023, the 411th Enginer Battalion is allotted to the U.S. States Army Reserve, where it is a subordinate unit of the 303rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, 9th Mission Support Command. It is based in Honolulu, Hawaii.
