U.S. ARMY 40TH SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The 40th Expeditionary Signal Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 40th Signal Construction Battalion on 6 January 1943. It has been redesignated twice, once in 1954 for the 40th Signal Battalion and again some time after 2008 to reflect the Battalion’s Expeditionary designation. It feature an orange bend bordered in silver to denote the unit as a Signal Corps organization. A peach in the upper right is an allusion to Georgia, source of the Battalion’s cadre and its first officers drawn from the 29th Signal Construction Battalion. The horse head refers to Kentucky, site of the unit’s first activation. Telephone poles are a symbol of communication; two reflect the creation of the 40th from the 29th Signal Construction Battalion. BENE FACTUM, the unit motto, is Latin for “Well Done.”

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Currently assigned to the 11th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade and stationed at Fort Huachuca in Arizona, the 40th Expeditionary Signal Battalion began its service life as the 40th Signal Construction Battalion when it was constituted on 31 July 1942 in the Army of the United States and activated 21 September 1942 at Camp Campbell, Kentucky. Under this designation, the organization would earn battle honors for five campaigns in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. Following Germany’s surrender, the unit was reorganized and redesignated as the 40th Signal Light Construction Battalion on 25 May 1945.

It would undergo two more redesignations (40th Signal Construction Battalion in 1950, 40th Signal Battalion in 1953) before it was deployed to Vietnam, where it was credited with participation in fourteen Vietnam War campaigns, earning two Meritorious Unit Commendations for its service between 1966 and 1968. The Battalion would not see combat again until the First Gulf War, where it took part in all three campaigns and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

The Battalion was deployed in advance of the invasion of Iraq in 2002, and subsequently was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its 2002-2004 deployment. It was the first of three MUCs encompassing service tours of 2005-2006 and 2007-2008. Additionally, its C Company was honored with a Presidential Unit Citation authorized by the Navy for its role in the success of the invasion of Iraq.

Nicknamed "Team 40," the 40th Signal Battalion was redesignated as the 40th Expeditionary Signal Battalion and headquartered at
Fort Huachuca as part of the 11th Corps Signal Brigade. At the time of its inactivation in July 2022, it was one of the Army's most decorated Signal Battalion, with nearly thirty campaign streamers and five Meritorious Unit Commendations.
