U.S. ARMY 408TH PERSONNEL SERVICES BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

While there is no entry for the 408th Personnel Services Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia at The Institute of Heraldry norany information on the Battalion’s formation, lineage, or history at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, newspaper articles relate that the Battalion was based in Schenectady, New York and that its first deployment to Iraq in support of the War on Terrorism began in December 2003 and ended in February 2005. This was followed by another mobilization in September 2005 that led to the Battalion’s deployment from Fort Tatum in New York to Camp Adder in Tallil, Iraq in 2005 – 2006, where it provided “Faithful Service To All.” The Battalion was responsible for postal services, processing and distributing incoming mail to troops and civilians at the major Coalition bases in Southern Iraq at Camps Adder, Cedar, and Scania, as well as at bases west of Baghdad.

The Battalion was allotted to the United States Army Reserve at the time of its deployments between 2003 and 2006.
