U.S. ARMY 3RD SUSTAINMENT COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

This Distinctive Unit Insignia was first approved on 21 March 1978 for the 3rd Support Command. It was subsequently redesignated for the 3rd Sustainment Command on 16 September 2007 with its description and symbolism amended.

The 3rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) was forged in the fires of the Korean War, and the use of a Korean taeguk inside an octagon represents its participation in eight campaigns during that conflict (a taeguk is the centerpiece of the flag of the Republic of Korea). Red, white, and blue interlaced chevronels are emblematic of the rock-solid support the unit provides for all units within its area of responsibility; additionally, the number of chevronels is a reference to the unit’s numerical designation. The unit's motto, "Sustaining the Line," is emblazoned on a scroll. (Factoid: the motto was adapted in 1977 after it was chosen as the winner of a contest in which soldiers submitted their ideas for mottos. Warrant Officer Richard Jones of the 881st Maintenance Battalion was presented with a $25 savings bond for his suggestion of "Sustaining the Line!")

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
