The 3rd Sustainment Command was forged in the fires of the Korean War, and the use of a Korean taeguk inside an octagon represents its participation in eight campaigns during that conflict (a taeguk is the centerpiece of the flag of the Republic of Korea). Red, white, and blue interlaced chevrons are emblematic of the rock-solid support the unit provides for all units within its area of responsibility. The unit's motto, "Sustaining the Line," is emblazoned on a scroll. (Factoid: the motto was adapted in 1977 after it was chosen as the winner of a contest in which soldiers submitted their ideas for mottos. Warrant Officer Richard Jones of the 881st Maintenance Battalion was presented with a $25 savings bond for his suggestion of "Sustaining the Line!") Notably absent from the design are the arrows found in the unit's CSIB.
