U.S. ARMY 391ST REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Better known as a unit crest or a DUI, the 391st Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved on 18 October 1960 and was amended to add the motto “We Will Always Win” and to revise the description of the design on 3 July 1969. Three vertical stripes—blue white, and yellow—of equal width are taken from the flag of the city of Rochester; the shield is actually the shield of Colonel Nathaniel Rochester, eponymous founder of the city and Revolutionary War soldier who was appointed Colonel of the North Carolina militia and a Commissioner responsible for building an arms factory in Hillsborough.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally constituted in the National Army as the 391st Infantry and assigned to the 98th Division on 23 July 1918, the Regiment was formed too late to see action in World War I. After post-war demobilization, it was reconstituted in the Organized Reserves on 24 June 1921 with the same designation and parent unit (98th Division, the later 98th Infantry Division). It was ordered into active military service in September 1942 and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater before being inactivated again on 16 February 1946.

The Regiment was activated on 19 December 1946 in the Organized Reserves, which became the Army Reserve in 1952, and was subsequently reorganized and redesignated as the 391st Regiment, an element of the 98th Division (Training), on 1 May 1959. It underwent a series of minor reorganizations, usually reflecting a change in the number of Battalion it was allotted or a change in the designation of its parent organization, the 98th Division. On 19 May 2017, its last remaining active unit, the 1st Battalion, cased its colors in a ceremony held at the Hall of Flags at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on 19 May 2017. It was serving in the 4th Brigade, 98th Training Division, 108th Training Command, U.S. Army Reserve at the time of its inactivation.
