U.S. ARMY 38TH INFANTRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 38th Infantry Regiment was formed in the Regular Army as the 38th Infantry on 15 May  1917 and organized on Jun 1, 1917 at Syracuse New York. Assigned to the 3rd Division, it was one of many of the Division’s units that tenaciously fought off the last German offensive of the war at the Second Battle of the Marne, earning the Division and its component units the nickname the “Rock of the Marne.”

Approved on 25 November 1922, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a unit crest or DUI) of the 38th Infantry Regiment pays tribute to the historic feat with inscription “Rock Of The Marne” at the bottom and imagery in the shield denoting the action: the broken chevron indicating the repulse of the Germans, a rock displayed in the crest, and the three stripes of the 3rd Division insignia displayed as bendlets.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 38th Infantry Regiment fought in six campaigns during World War I and was awarded a French Croix de Guerre with Palm for the heroic stand at the Marne River. Before the start of World war II, it was relieved from the 3rd Division and assigned to the 2nd Division (which became the 2nd Infantry Division in 1942). It would go on to take part in World War II five European Theater campaigns, earning Presidential Unit Citations for action at Hill 154 during the fighting for the city of Brest in France and at the village of Krinkelt during the Battle of Elsenborn Ridge. It was also honored with its second French Croix de Guerre, this one with a Silver-Gilt Star (also for the fighting at Brest), and a Belgian Fourragere with two citations in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army.

The Regiment was called into service again during the Korean War, fighting in all ten of that conflict’s campaigns and earning a Presidential Unit Citation and three Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citations. It was relieved on 8 November 1957 from assignment to the 2nd Infantry Division and reorganized as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System. In the War on Terrorism, the Regiment’s exact number of campaigns has not yet been determined but as of 2019 it had been awarded three Meritorious Unit Commendations for tours in 2007-2008, 2009-2010, and 2012-2013.

As of Summer 2023, the 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment is assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division and is based at Fort Carson.
