U.S. ARMY 385TH MILITARY POLICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 385th Military Police Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 13 September 1955. Green and yellow, the branch colors of the Military Police Corps since 1922, is used almost exclusively in the design of the DUI, with a yellow shepherd’s crook crossed with a yellow sword on solid green shield; the crook is adapted from the coats of arms of several cities in the Rhine Province, an allusion to the unit’s World War II service in that region. It also symbolizes leadership and guidance, while the sword denotes the military nature of the leadership. “Honor Vigilance Justice” is the Battalion motto.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 385th Military Police Battalion was originally constituted on 28 October 1944 with the same designation it holds now in the Army of the United States. Activated in November 1944 in France, the Battalion took part in the Rhineland campaign before being reorganized and redesignated as 1 August 1846 as the 385th Military Police Service Battalion. It held this designation for eight years before being given its current designation on 8 December 1954.

The Battalion was inactivated between 5 June 1993 and 17 April 2006. Since being reactivated, it has been deployed overseas on at least two occasions in support of the War on Terrorism. Following its first tour in 2006-2008, it was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation. In March 2014, it was tapped for a Valorous Unit Award for extraordinary heroism against an armed enemy during the period 8 June 2011 to May 2012 as it supported the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division as it carried out combat and stability operations across two regional commands that included several districts around Kandahar City, Badghis, Herat, and Farah Provinces.

As of Autumn 2023, the 385th Military Police Battalion is headquartered at Fort Stewart-Hunter Airfield, Georgia.
