The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 385th Aviation Group, Arizona Army National Guard was approved on 21 May 1991, five years before the organization was redesignated as the 385th Aviation Regiment. Also called a unit crest, this Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) features the two colors traditionally associated with Army Aviation, ultramarine blue and golden orange, complemented by red for courage, gold for high achievement and excellence, blue for loyalty, and black for stability.
Three of the colors—red, gold, and blue—are found in the state flag of Arizona, the Group’s home location, and blue also suggests the sky, the unit’s theater of operations. The golden rays of the sun behind the Thunderbird are also allusions to Arizona, and the mythical creatures association with thunder and lightning recalls the unit’s powerful strike capabilities. The triangle recalls the shape of an arrowhead, thus evoking the concept of combat preparedness.
