U.S. ARMY 383RD REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 383rd Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, better known as a unit crest or a DUI, was originally approve for the 383rd Infantry Regiment on 5 August 1954. It was amended once on 7 August 1970 to revise the, then was redesignated for the 383rd Regiment on 28 October 1993 with description and symbolism revised. A blue shield commemorates the organization’s heritage in the Infantry branch, while the white saw-tooth fess is an allusion to the mountainous terrain. The lower wavy upon which the pine tree rests is the Pacific Ocean, with the tree serving as an emblem of the evergreens so prevalent in the region, which was the home area of the original unit in 1922. "Dependable" is the unit motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 383rd Regiment was constituted in National Army as the 383rd Infantry and assigned to the 96th Division on 5 September 1918, too late to see action in World War I. Following a brief demobilization, the unit was reconstituted in he Organized Reserves with the same designation and parent unit as it previously had. Ordered into active military service in 1942, the Regiment would take part in two campaigns in the Pacific and, in each instance, earn an Arrowhead device for taking part in an Assault landing. The Regiment was also honored with a Presidential Unit Citation and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for it service during this period.

In June 1959, the Regiment was reorganized as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System to comprise the 1st Battle Group, an element of the 96th Infantry Division. Four years later, the ties between the 383rd and the 96th Infantry Division came to an end as the 1st Battle Group was inactivated in March 1953 and relieved from assignment to the 96th. Beginning in 1993 and on into the 21st Century, the Regiment’s Battalions would be elements of the 75th Training Division.

As of Autumn 2023, the Battalions are all Army Reserve Units, no longer elements of the 75th Training Division (which is now designated the 75th Innovation Command). 1-383 is assigned to the 181st Multifunctional Training Brigade, 85th U.S. Army Reserve Support Command; 2-383 is assigned to 1st Brigade, 86th Training Division, 84th Training Command; and 3-383 is assigned to 4th Cavalry Brigade, 85th U.S. Army Reserve Support Command.
