U.S. ARMY 38TH AIR DEFENSE ARTILLERY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The design of the 38th Air Defense Artillery Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 7 February 1967. A fleur-de-lis represents the unit's service in France during World War I, and the taeguk on which it is superimposed is emblematic of its service in the Korean War. A silhouette of this device resembles a helmet and is a reference to the Brigade's origins from the 38th Coast Artillery, a unit whose personnel's badges had helmets on them. "By Valor And Power" was adopted as the unit motto when the insignia was approved.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 38th Air Defense Artillery Brigade was originally constituted in the Coast Artillery Corps as the HHC, 38th Artillery Brigade on 21 June 1918, and earned a World War I streamer without inscription. Demobilized in 1919, it was reconstituted in 1933 as HHB, 38th Coast Artillery Brigade and activated in February 1941. It would be redesignated as HHB, 38th Antiaircraft Artillery Brigade before seeing action in World War II, where it was credited with participation in five European Theater campaigns. After a couple of inactivations, it was redesignated as HHB, 38th Artillery Brigade in March 1961 and activated in Korea, where it would spend the next twenty years.

During this time, it would be redesignated the HHB, 38th Air Defense Artillery Brigade in March 1972 and win an Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for it service from 1978 to 1981. Inactivated on 31 July 1981, the unit would be dormant for nearly forty years until its reactivation on 16 October 2018 in Japan.
