U.S. ARMY 36TH MEDICAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The Institute of Heraldry, the organization tasked with approving unit insignias and maintaining a database containing the history and description of insignias, medals, and other heraldic items, has no entry for the 36th Medical Battalion. Similarly, the U.S. Army Center of Military History has no information regarding the origin and lineage of the Battalion itself, though it does have a record of the Permanent Order that awarded the Battalion a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service in Operation Iraqi Freedom between January and October 2005 while assigned to the 62nd Medical Group, 44th Medical Command.

The image of a serpent has long been a symbol of medicine, and the use of a cross has denoting the provision of medical assistance and care dates back to the time of the Crusades. An arrowhead on an insignia typically indicates the unit has been awarded an Arrowhead device for participation in an assault landing; which in the case of the 36th Medical Battalion most likely took place during Operation Desert Storm while assigned to the 44th Medical Brigade, forerunner of the 44th Medical Command.

AUXILIUM CITO, the unit motto, is Latin for “Aid Speedily.”

We encourage anyone with information regarding the origins, history, lineage, or current status of the 36th Medical Battalion to email us so we can include it in this and any other of our store pages related to the Battalion and its insignia.
