U.S. ARMY 36TH ENGINEER BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 36th Engineer Combat Regiment, forerunner of today’s 36th Engineer Brigade, participated in ten campaigns across both the European and Pacific Theaters during World War II, and in five of them—Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Anzio, and Southern France—the unit took part in the actual assault landings.

This impressive record and more of the achievements the Brigade can claim is visually recounted in the 36th Engineer Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest. At the top of the insignia is an embattled tower with a series of five upward-pointing arrows just below them; a demi-fleur-de-lis celebrates the unit’s service in France. A scroll encircling a shield is charged with nine stars, one of them superimposed on a taeguk; these symbolize the nine campaigns the 36th Engineer Combat Group fought in during the Korean War, as well as two Army Meritorious Unit Commendations and a Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation it was awarded.

On the shield in the center of the 36th Engineer Brigade unit crest are ten more stars, recalling the total number of World War II campaigns the unit took part in. The shield’s scarlet and white colors are the Corps of Engineer regimental colors and are a nod to the unit’s regimental status before 1945. The sea horse is taken from the insignia of the 36th Engineers; it is still found on the Regimental Distinctive Insignia of the 36th Engineer Battalion.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
