U.S. ARMY 357TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 357th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, originally approved on 8 September 1927 for the 357th Infantry Regiment, Organized Reserves. It has been amended once (to withdraw “Organized Reserves” from the designation in 1959) and was redesignated on 8 July 1999 to reflect the unit’s redesignation as a parent regiment in the U.S. Army Regimental System.

Its shield is blue, the color of Infantry, to denote the branch in which the organization was first formed. The broken silver chevron (or “broken rompu point debased chevron,” to use official heraldic language) is a visual representation of the German salient the Regiment dislodged and pushed back at the Bois de Bantheville and Grand Carré Farm in World War I. Above the dislodged salient is the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the 90th Division, the unit which the Regiment was assigned to for almost half a century. Two mullets (stars) commemorate the two major operations which the Regiment took part in during World War I. The unit motto, SIEMPRE ALERTA, is inscribed on the scroll at base of the insignia; it translates in English as “Always On The Alert.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 357th Regiment was constituted as the 357th Infantry in the National Army on 5 August 1917 and assigned to the 90th Division, a relationship it would retain (while activated) until 1965. It is credited with fighting in three campaigns of World War I and five during World War II, earning a French Croix de Guerre with Palm, World War II for actions along the Moselle-Sarre River.

From 1959 to 1965, the Regiment’s components were organized as elements of the 90th Infantry Division, at which time its two Battalions (1st and 2nd) were inactivated on 31 December and simultaneously relieved from assignment to the 90th ID. In 1999, while still designated as the 357th Infantry, it was removed from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized to comprise three Battalions, all elements of the 91st Division (Training Support) that were allotted to the Regular Army. All three Battalions were relieved from assignment to the 91st Division in December 2006.

Since 2001, each Battalion has been recognized for its outstanding performance as a training organization with the award of two Army Superior Unit Awards. As of Autumn 2023, both 1st and 2nd Battalions, 357th Regiment are assigned to the 189th Combined Arms Training Brigade,  with the 1-357th Brigade Support Battalion providing advanced instruction for personnel in Support and the 2nd for Infantry Soldiers. Both Battalions are stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
