U.S. ARMY 350TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 350th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or a DUI, was originally approved on 27 March 128 for the 350th Regiment Infantry, Organized Reserves. It subsequently amended on two occasions (February and July 1954) to correct wording, and it May 1999 it was redesignated for the 305th Regiment. A white bend divides the red and blue portions of the shield, with blue representing the Infantry origins of the organization; the bend is from the arms of Lorraine, a region in which the unit saw action during World War, but in a different tincture (color). The Regiment’s beginnings in and allocation to the state of Iowa are reflected in the DUI’S inclusion of those colors, which come from the State Flag of Iowa that was approved in 1921 (see below for significance of that year). A fleur-de-lis in the red area is for service in France; the ear of corn is an allusion to “The Corn Song,” the Soldier’s marching song of Iowa. "Fidelity and Service" is the Regimental motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 350th Regiment was constituted on 5 August 1917 in the National Army as the 350th Infantry and assigned to the 88th Division. Fighting as part of the 156th Infantry Brigade, the Regiment earned battle honors for the Alsace 1918 campaign before the war ended in November 1918, and the Regiment was demobilized the following year in early June 1918.

But as with so many Regiments that were formed in the National Army during World War I, the unit was reconstituted in June 1921 with the same designation and assigned to the same parent organization, the 88th Division, but was placed in Organized Reserves rather than Regular Army. Called into active military service on 15 July 1942, the 350th fought with the 88th Infantry Division in three campaigns in Italy (Rome-Arno, North Apennines, Po Valley), earning the Regiment a French Croix de Guerre with Palm and its 2nd Battalion a Presidential Unit Citation.

The Regiment was inactivated in Italy on 8 October 1947 and was relieved from assignment to the 88th Infantry on 20 May 1948, only be to activated less than a month later on 15 June 1948 and then taken from the Organized Reserve Corps and allotted to the Regular Army in November 1951. The Regiment was inactivated in August 1956 and more than forty years elapsed before it saw any organizational changes, namely its withdrawal from the Regular Army and allotment to the Regular Army on 29 October 1998; it was redesignated as the 350th Regiment a year later on 17 October 1999 and reorganized to comprise the 1st and 2nd Battalions, elements of the 87th Division (Training Support).

In September 2015, the 1st Battalion, 350th Regiment was inactivated, but was later reactivated and assigned to U.S. Army Fort Buchanan in Puerto Rico as a Logistics Support Battalion. The Regiment’s 2nd Battalion was also classified as a Logistics Support Battalion and was assigned to the 177th Armored Brigade, First Army Division East, but as of Autumn 2023 it no longer is listed as a component of the Brigade.
