U.S. ARMY 34TH ARMORED REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Nicknamed “Centurions,” the 34th Armored Regiment was constituted in August 1941 and activated the following October 1. Beginning in September 1943, the Regiment was broken up and many of its units sent on the military equivalent of a diaspora (those interested in the details can view the Regiment’s lineage and numerous changes at the U.S. Army Center of Military History Web site) the units that remained in its lineage took part in five World War II campaigns in the European Theater and were awarded a Presidential Unit Citation and a Luxembourg Croix de Guerre.

In 1957, a variety of units (battalions and companies) associated with the Regiment were consolidated into the 34th Armor, a parent regiment in the Combat Arms Regimental System. The 34th Armor was credited with participation in 14 (out of 17 total) campaigns in the Vietnam War and was the recipient of two Valorous Unit Awards. During the First Gulf War, the Regiment—which had been reorganized under the U.S. Army Regimental System in 1988—took part in all three campaigns and was again the recipient of a pair of Valorous Unit Awards. During the War on Terrorism, the 1st Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment earned another Valorous Unit Award for service between April and August 2004.

As of Summer 2023, the 2nd Battalion, 34th Armored Regiment is assigned to the
1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, while the 1st Battalion appears to have been inactivated.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
